Juan's False Reality Established

The chapter is set as Juan's flashback of when he was talking to his mother at her death bed. As the two talk it becomes obvious that Juan is in a position of vulnerability and so he is not only doing everything he can for his mother, but is also unaware of what is around him. Dolores asks Juan to find Pedro and "don't ask him for anything," (Rulfo 1) but at the same time she tells Juan to "make him pay" (Rulfo 1). This creates a juxtaposition within the motive of Juan's journey. After leaving his mother, Juan begins to imagine and create a reality involving Pedro, before even meeting the man. The chapter then ends with this idea, without this false reality ever being interrupted, forcing the reader to wonder if Juan's journey is influenced by his self-created world.

  2. It's not juxtaposition because Dolores is just providing context on just how much Pedro owes them.

  3. I don't really feel as if the ideas are in juxtaposition to one another, because the idea of asking for nothing is on a literal level, but when Dolores ask Juan to make Pedro pay, I believe it is at the emotional and mental level, I don't believe she means any type of compensation.

  4. His motive is more contradictory than juxtaposed. This is an interesting observation: "After leaving his mother, Juan begins to imagine and create a reality involving Pedro, before even meeting the man." Why is it significant?
