Pedro Paramo chapter one close read

Chapter one of Pedro Paramo goes into great detail about the plans of Juan's journey. His mother, who was dying had one wish, and that was to have Juan go visit his father and "make him pay" for keeping them out of his mind for all of that time. The interesting aspect of this chapter is that at the end of the chapter, Juan stops addressing Pedro as his father. He instead addresses him as his mother ex husband. Being that he does not call him his father, it seems to me that Juan does not want anything do do with Pedro. Which almost makes Pedro dead from the start and a punishment in itself. Juan will then go fulfill his mothers wishes and embark on the journey to the town in which his father claims himself to.
