Social Classes in Persepolis

The struggle between social classes is a very prevalent theme throughout Persepolis. Marjane has always been ashamed to ride in her father's Cadillac but has never known why until page 37 where she finally comes to understand social classes. On page 37 her maid Mehri cannot be with Marjane's neighbor because she is from a different social class. At first she didn't understand why they couldn't be together but when her father explains it to her she gets confused whether or not her father is against social classes. On page 6 Marjane says "I want to be a prophet... Because or maid did not eat with us. Because my father had a Cadillac." both reasons she wanted to be a prophet were because of differing social classes. Her maid was a lower social class than her so she wasn't allowed to eat with the family. Her father drove a Cadillac and it showed that her family was richer than most and was afraid people would judge her for it. Her family protests against social classes but in their home they still uphold these values. Marjane sees how contradictory this is and understands social classes but does not agree with them.
