Oppression Towards Women
The graphic novel, Persepolis, explores the life of women in Iran. Throughout the novel women are oppressed and looked down upon by the culture of Iran; Only a few people resist the oppression and try to become more modern women. When Marjane expresses her want to be a prophet on page 6, Satrapi creates a panel of other prophets questioning why a women would be chosen to be a prophet; as if women weren't worthy of being prophets. The novel expands our knowledge that women were required to wear veils on page 2 ;and partly eliminating their ability of free speech. Men were allowed to look however they wanted, but women were not allowed to be able to be as unique.
