Governmental Opression in Persepolis

Throughout the novel, the government oppresses the population of Iran. One of the biggest policies they put into place to subjugate its constituents was the requirement of the veil for women. The author and main character of the novel, Marjane Satrapi, is conflicted about this demand from the government. In one frame, she is show split in half, one side religious and with a veil on, the other modern and without a veil. Marjane says "I really didn't know what to think about the veil. Deep down I was very religious but as a family we were very modern and avant-garde.
