One
major theme that is very prevalent in Persepolis is the idea of rebellions.
Marjane revolves her daily routine around finding herself even if that means
going against what everyone thinks she should be.
Right from the start of the
book she was told to wear a Veil. However, she rebelled that idea because she
believes that the Veil is not going to allow her to live her life as she wants
to live it. She then goes even further by wearing a Denim jacket, Nikes, and a
Michael Jackson badge. This truly shows that Marjane does not want what is
mandatory in her life, but instead be able to live free. Rebellions are every
where throughout the book in order to covey they idea that you have to fight
for what you want, even if it goes against the social standards. Once Marjane
is told that she has to wear the Veil and she won't be able to convince anyone
otherwise, she decides to do worse things. She then begins to smoke to really
convey the negative effects that constricting lives can bring upon it's
victims. Finally, if you fight for what you truly do want, you will begin to
make a change for the better in your life and in the society as a whole.
Rebellions change the course of the book for the main affect of getting readers to really relate to what Marjane goes through on a daily basis. This is really why the main and most prevalent theme of the book is rebellions.
