Themes in Persepolis
One theme I noticed in Persepolis was strength in your beliefs. Throughout the novel each event is a test of how strong a character's faith is in their belief. Each time the character is tested we see them either rise to the occasion or hide from the consequences of displaying their beliefs. Marjane's mom for example, when she is put into a newspaper as a protester she immediately goes into hiding. She even goes so far as to die her hair a different color and wear shades around. On the other hand, characters like Uncle Anoosh have unwavering faith in the face of adversity. He still told stories of revolting after getting out of prison and was sent back to prison because of his beliefs but he never took back his words, instead he chose death over changing his mind. We are able to see that as Marjane develops as a character that her beliefs are strong. Based on the treatment of others with beliefs as strong as hers we are left to wonder: will she stand up against oppression, or go into hiding when her beliefs are challenged?
