Power Struggles and Sexual Charges in The Color Purple

The main power struggle in the novel is not prominently Celie's, as she doesn't seem to want to fight back, but rather Harpo and Sofia's. Harpo wants Sofia to obey him so much that he didn't realize how happy he was with her. Harpo ends up attempting to beat her and instead she beats him. Sofia tells Celie that she will not let any man beat her and that she has learned to fight back. Harpo wants power, he wants to be in control of Sofia but she won't accept that. Aside from Sofia and Harpo, there is a power struggle for most people. All of them feel a power struggle with whites and Shug shows Celie that African women can have power.
There are also a lot of sexual connotations in the novel. Celie's sexual experiences have all been very bad or she has just been null to it. She was raped by her father and now she just ignores her husband when he has sex with her. On the other hand, there is Shug. She tells Celie that she enjoys sex and tries to teach Celie to enjoy it also.
