Light vs Dark vs The Struggle
Mulisch juxtaposes good and evil through a poem on page 38. The woman in the prison asserts that they " hate in the name of light, whereas they hate only in darkness," (Mulisch 38). He suggests through that line, that good intentions and evil are closely linked and generally inseparable. Mulisch uses light vs dark as symbols to emphasize his point. A gray area is established in the way this woman describes her hatred; she puts light and darkness out as two parts of one whole. Now, instead of having clear sides, everything is blurred and becomes a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. Naturally, we choose those who, as she said hate in the name of light. The people who fight for love.
