The theme of changing for things around you is present
within Persepolis. The Iranian revolution is fighting for the change of
the country in response to the change of power. One example of change in
the novel is when Marjane's mother dies her hair to hide when her photo is in
the paper.(5) Something interesting about this is that she is fighting
for rights of women not to have to hid themselves, yet to protect herself and
her family she must change to hide herself. Another change is when Marji
begins looking at icons such as Iron Maiden and Kim Wilde and wanting to be
like them.(131) She begins to change into a as the people would probably
think, a western attitude. Now the significance of the change in the
novel is that it shows that sometimes we must change for the better good.
Satrapi uses the images to show this change by being in a sequence that shows
the main character's progression through life. it also shows that to have
change(Iranian Revolution) you must change yourself. In the end,
Persepolis has a key that unlocks the change in each of the characters to lead
to the biggest change of all, the end of the Shah.
Try re-wording this so that it's more clear and explicit: " the theme of changing for things around you."
